Editorial Design for a Kaleidoscopic Territory

The Challenge: Curating Vast Diversity

The Secretariat of Tourism for the State of São Paulo required a high-end promotional suite to attract international travelers to the plural and sprawling landscapes of the state’s interior. The core challenge was to transform an overwhelming volume of locations and cultural data into a cohesive, inviting, and atemporal visual system that 1. reflected the vibrant complexity of the region, and 2. could stand the test of time and transcend fleeting design trends.

The Concept: The Flâneur’s Navigation System

My strategic approach was to move beyond the traditional “guidebook” and create a “Coffee Table Book”: a tactile object of desire. To achieve this, I developed a semiotic structure based on seven thematic pillars, each with its own color identity and universal iconography:

  • Adventure & Ecotourism, Sun & Beach, Rural, Religious, Historical & Cultural, Trails & Paths, and Flavors & Cuisine. This color-coded taxonomy allowed the reader to “flâner” (stroll) through the content without a pre-determined route, providing a sense of ontological security while navigating the unknown.

The Execution: High-Fidelity Information Architecture

I led the complete graphic project, from the initial information architecture, photo curation, image treatment to the final print specifications.

  • Universal Iconography: The icon system was designed for maximum clarity, ensuring that foreign tourists could navigate the different segments regardless of language barriers.
  • Premium Editorial Standards: To emphasize the “panoramic” experience, I utilized a dynamic grid with large-scale photography. The book was printed on high-weight glossy couché paper, a choice that enhanced the color saturation and provided the “luxury” tactile feel necessary for a diplomatic and promotional gift.
  • Trilingual Integration: I managed the complex diagramming for Portuguese, English, and Spanish content, ensuring that the informational “nudge” remained consistent and clear across all three languages.
  • Integrated Kit: The project was extended into a comprehensive traveler’s kit, including a complete folding map and thematic notebooks, maintaining a rigorous visual hierarchy across all touchpoints.

The Impact: A Sensory Invitation

The resulting material became a benchmark for state-level tourism promotion. By prioritizing a classic editorial aesthetic over temporary trends, the book achieved its goal of being atemporal. It transformed a complex logistical map into a delightful sensory journey, effectively “midwifing” the state’s interior into the global tourism market.

The Professional Takeaway

This project showcases my ability to manage high-volume editorial production and complex information design. It demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of how material choices—like paper weight and color-coded navigation—can influence the perception of a destination and build a lasting brand identity for a territory.
